How I Finally Found and Landed My Dream Job (With No Previous Experience!)

Share

Have you found your dream job?  Are you sitting in a career that gives you fulfillment, challenge, achievement, and pride?

If not, I’ll let you in on the secret of how I finally found and landed my dream job!  It’s never too late, you know.

Steve Jobs said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.”  I couldn’t agree more.

If you’ve read my About Me page, you know I’m a full time Human Resources Professional.  I LOVE my job.  Seriously?!  Seriously.  And I got into this career field with no previous HR experience.

How did I do it?!

I’m here to tell you my secrets.

Before the Dream Job

I’ve worked a variety of jobs and never had a very clearly defined professional future.  My degree is in English, minor in French, and I spent 4 (amazing) years dancing in production shows for Carnival Cruise Lines.  I knew I didn’t want to be a teacher or a journalist.  I knew I couldn’t dance professionally forever.  After I fell in love and moved back home to Colorado, I started managing a small retail store.

That’s where I started to get a little bit of exposure to Human Resources – hiring, training, discipline, payroll, policies.  I thought I knew what HR was.  I had NO idea!!

Finding my Dream Job

One day, when I knew I was ready to move on from retail, I stumbled upon a job opening for a Professional HR Internship with a notable organization.  While it was an internship, it was not truly entry-level: it required a Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related work experience, among other skills.

I read that job description probably 20 times – it called my name.

There’s no other way to describe the feeling I had.  I knew I wasn’t a shoe-in based on my educational and work background, but I swear I thought, “That’s me! That’s my job!”

2 Unique Tools You Gain by Finding Your Dream Job

Tool #1: A natural feeling of belonging to a career field.

I did not connect to the job title, the salary, the organization, or the industry. I connected to the JOB DUTIES and SKILLS.  I connected to the meat of the work.  It made me excited!  I felt ready to do it before I knew how.

I paused to tune in to my own natural talents and the work that I enjoy, and then I found the dream job description to match.

Tool #2: A drive to confidently and fiercely pursue the job opportunity.

I knew it was right for me, and it gave me the confidence to build my case and share it without reservation.

Your Journey to Find Your Dream Job

Have you had that feeling?  Have you read something or felt something that you connected with so deeply, you thought, “that’s me!”?

If you haven’t, find that thing.  THAT job is the one that will make you soar without effort while others around you trudge.  THAT job is the one you will give genuine and whole-hearted service to.  THAT job is the one you will proudly share with your spouse and your children.  THAT job will bring out your light.  That is God’s gift to you.

Does it mean that if you find your dream job, you will always love it 100% of the time?  No.  Does that mean everything you do will be easy or without disappointment? Of course not.

A word of caution: The grass is NOT always greener! I said this before, but in my experience, this path does not include chasing titles or salaries.

Every job comes with a few mundane tasks, challenging projects that add a little stress, and difficult people.  But your pride and satisfaction in the doing the work itself will override those other things at the end of the day. That’s how you’ll know you’ve found your dream job!

Now let’s move on to nailing the interview…

Nailing the Interview for Your Dream Job

Listen, friends.  This is the truth: you will be an irresistible candidate for your dream job when you connect with it so innately, so passionately, so genuinely.

You need to meet the minimum requirements they are asking for.  However, you will shine and the hiring manager will really hear your passion above all else.  You will be able to talk with ease about how you fit the needs of the position, because they will be skills innate to your natural talent.  The hiring team will be willing to give you a shot, even when you don’t demonstrate as much experience as others.

Passion, drive, motivation, and service are not things a hiring manager can impress upon you.  YOU must bring those to the job with you.  Technical skills, process and procedure – much of that can be taught and improved on the job.

So, dreamers, find the job that calls your name – not the title, not the money – the STUFF the job is made of.  Find that job.  And chase it with all your might!

Good luck out there!
